Volunteer History

Bill BevingtonThe Spokane Swing Dance Club:  I helped organize the Spokane Sing Dance Club in 1997.  I was a member of the Board of Directors there for three years.  My emphasis at that time was to increase membership.  The club had 14 members at the end of its first month.  When I left Spokane in early 2000 the club had 300 members.  After my move to Seattle in early 2000 I continued to support the club as a volunteer webmaster for the club's Monster Mash Swing Dance convention website.  The Spokane Swing Dance Club continues to be a valuable asset to the social dance community in that city.

The Seattle Swing Dance Club:  I served as a volunteer and board member for the Seattle Swing Dance Club from 2001 to early 2006.  From 2001 to 2004 I served the club as a volunteer.  I served on the Board of Directors from 2004 until early 2006.  During that time my activities included:

  •  Development of  the club's first website devoted to the dissemination of information on the club's local activities to its membership as well as the larger dance community in the Seattle area.  I served as webmaster until early 2006.

  • Development of the club's email newsletter "The Pulse."  This was the first time the club made use of an email list to make its activities known to the membership and general public.  Initially we had about 40 email addresses on the list.  When I handed off this task to another volunteer in late 2005 we had over 1,400 email addresses.  "The Pulse" continues to be an excellent dance information resource for the dancers in and around the Seattle area.

  • I organized the club's "First Time Free Dance Card" program.

  • I served on the bylaws committee for two years.

  • I was responsible for helping develop several "Policies and Procedures" for the club including its Diversity Policy, Annual Elections Procedure, and the Annual DJ Did Procedure.

  • Along with another Board Member, Donna Rogers, I was directly responsible for organizing the club's first annual membership drive called "West Coast Swing for Newcomers."  During my four year involvement with this weekend event the club more than doubled its membership.

  • In 2005 I was directly responsible for organizing a 14 week foundational series of West Coast Swing classes designed to raise the level of dance within the club's membership.  This series of classes included over 40 hours of floor time for its participants and was taught by top-notch, nationally known, local instructors.  In addition to raising the level of dance within the membership, the event was also responsible for bringing in many new members and increasing the club's cash flow.

  • I developed and implemented the club's current workshop program.  This program played a large part in raising the level of dance within the membership.  Additionally the program substantially increased the club's cash flow.

  • I was directly responsible for organizing the club's Publicity Committee.  I also served on that committee for three years.

  • I assisted the club's treasurer in the cash room for the club's annual convention for two years.
